Description
Miss Doris Lester, seated in a chair, co-founder of Kingsley Hall, the Hull House of east London, described slums and war as two great evils of the world. Miss Lester and her sister, Miss Murial Lester, have spent years fighting slums. The retired social worker was there for a series of speaking engagements sponsored by the Young Men's Christian Association. Their work in the next 45 years to alleviate the conditions included establishment of Kingsley Hall, England's largest settlement house; the Children's House, a day school and recreational center; one of the England's first nursery schools and the first fully graded Sunday school in England.
