Description
Oakley F. Dodd has been in federal work for 48 years. Clipping reads "Oakley F. Dodd has just concluded another session here with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. And thereby hangs a tale thought to be unequaled in the history of federal courts in this country. Dodd will start his 28th year as clerk of court February 1, 1953, but he has been in federal work for 48 years. He is thought to be the only federal court clerk in the country who has served in the old U.S. District Court and the Court of Appeals. Also, he is thought to have served under more federal judges (18 in all) than any other federal court clerk in the nation. A wooden sidewalk still extended one block beyond the old red T&P Station at the foot of Main St. when Dodd first started coming to Fort Worth with the court 27 years ago. He has not missed a session of the court here, in Atlanta Ga., or Montgomery, Ala., since becoming clerk. He sends a deputy to terms of the six-judge court at Jacksonville, Fla., and resides in New Orleans, headquarters for the appeals court. Dodd was still in short pants when he went to work as an office boy in the old circuit court in his native city of New Orleans June 1, 1904. In 1909 he was transferred to the U.S. District Court there as clerical assistant and in 1919 was made deputy clerk of the federal district court. Going to the appeals court as chief deputy in 1922, Dodd was promoted to his present position as clerk in 1926. On June 1, 1953 he will start his 49th year with federal courts. He and Mrs. Dodd have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. She accompanies him to Fort Worth each year for the November term of the court. 'I have four daughters, four sons-in-law, four grandsons, four granddaughters and when I'm in a poker game and hold a four I draw four cards,' Dodd says with a laugh. Defying Hoyle, he's made a good hand that way more than once." Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Section One, Page Eight, on Sunday, November 30, 1952.
