Description
Fifty years ago this fall, oil was discovered in the Petrolia area of Clay County by a farmer seeking water for his cattle. This discovery, the first in North Texas, paved the way for oil development in Clay, Wichita, Jack, Montague and Archer Counties and resulted in the first natural gas for North Texas. The anniversary of this discovery will be observed September 14-15 by an oil celebration in Henrietta in conjunction with Clay County's annual Pioneer Reunion and Rodeo. Shown is a photo of an early oil well in Henrietta.
