Description
A former Haltom City police officer, Charlie F. Wooten, 23, used the "friendly" approach to capture two escaped prisoners from Carswell Air Force Base. Wooten stopped to talk with his former partner, R. L. Stowe, and overheard Stowe's conversation with Carswell Air Police, who were describing the two escapers, Patrol first class, Billy J. Capps, 21, and Vinson R. Lowrey, 17. The pair dug under one of two heavy wire-net fences surrounding the prison barracks and climbed over the second. Wooten said he left Stowe and started for Fort Worth in his car. C. F. Wooten is shown seated in his car. Published in Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, August 23, 1951.
