Description
There, according to one product of the modern athletics program, is the foundation for the awful college basketball scandal. "Colleges", he said, "have sown a doctrine of worldliness, one utterly detached from right and wrong or the teachings of the Christ, one that dictates 'win or else' and indirectly implies 'get yours while the getting's good'. Is there any wonder that youth thus unguided should succumb to the temptation of easy attaboy for point manipulation in a mere game". The speaker was Arthur Mazmanian who, as second baseman for the Beaumont Roughnecks professional baseball club, and graduate of the University of Southern California, has been a part of two prominent adjuncts of the American sports sense. Published in Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, July 29, 1951.
