"It's so hard... not knowing... just waiting. And the hours seem like days," said Mrs. Betty Jane Pollard, wife of Staff Sergent Elbert W. Pollard, one of 16 crewmen on the missing B-36. Trying to console their mother, above, are Molly, 4, at left, Betty Ruth, 2, and Patricia Ann, 6. Staff Sergent Pollard would later be declared killed in action. Several years later Betty would remarry to a man maned Eldon Wheeler.
