Description

The Red River Shootout game between the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas is being held at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. The rivalry began in 1900 and has been running since. The 1941 contest is all Longhorns early and the Sooners found their offense difficult to stop. In the second quarter the Longhorns went seventy-one yards on one play to extend the lead to 21-0. Fullback Pete Layden faked a hand-off to Jack Crain and then ran straight over the middle for sixteen yards. Just before being wrapped-up in a tackle, Layden lateraled to End Malcolm Kutner. Kutner stripped away tackles from Sooner pursuers and ran the ball fifty-five yards for the touchdown. He is pictured moments before crossing the goal line. The Longhorns went on to win the game 40-7. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, October 13, 1941.
