Description
Fleeing the gulf storm, 19 of Uncle Sam's fastest pursuit ships paid a surprise call at Municipal Airport en route to Barksdale Field, Louisiana. Their sudden arrival drained airport pumps of all surplus gasoline, and trucks had to be summoned hurriedly before the sleek craft, mounting 37 millimeter cannon in their noses, could take on 1,419 gallons of fuel. This is a shot of some of the P-39Ds, which have been participating in Louisiana war maneuvers, lined up on the field. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, September 24, 1941.
