Description

Seventh Day Adventists generally were misunderstood when they refused to bear arms and sought to keep the Sabbath holy during the World War. But the Adventists are as patriotic as anyone, so the denomination has organized medical units to train its young men for active service on the battlefield, ministering to the sick and wounded at training camp in Southwestern Junior College in Keene, Texas. Major E. N. Dick of Lincoln, Nebraska, instructor of the corps, talks informally with some of the cadets. Seventh Day Adventists solders include (left to right) Private Beck, Private Herbert Bruner, Keene, Texas ; Lieutenant L. V. Grunke, Kansas City; Private Jack Fisher, Stanley, N. M.; Private Vernon Smith, Edinburg, Texas; Major E. N. Dick of Lincoln, Nebraska; Corporal Ralph Jameson, Addington, Oklahoma; Privates Lauren Choate, Clovis, New Mexico; Arthur Willhelm, Fort Summer; New Mexico; H. W. Day, Stanley, New Mexico, and Alvin Meier, Okeen, Oklahoma. The men are in formation with Major Dick at the far end of the group sitting on a table. Above Major Dick's head hangs a picture of Jesus Christ. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram evening edition, January 3, 1941.
