Major General Harry H. Johnson, former oil man, one of Texas' best-known leaders of World War II, has retired from active duty. Shortly before his retirement, the former Fort Worth oil man was decorated with the War Department's Distinguished Service Medal by General Jonathan M. Wainwright. This award was made for outstanding service in the Southwest Pacific. The citation commended the recipient for efficient collection and surrender of 90,000 Japanese troops immediately following VJ-Day. General Johnson is a former commander of the 93rd Infantry Division. He served in Europe before taking the Pacific command, one of his posts being the governor of Rome. At the time called into service with the Texas National Guard, General Johnson was assistant to the vice president of the Gulf Oil Corporation. He had joined the Gulf staff at Wichita Falls and remaining here until 1926 when transferred to Eastland. He became the company's West Texas lease man in 1930 and in 1935 moved to Houston as assistant, then vice president there. General Johnson graduated from Texas A&M College and served as a lieutenant in the old 36th Division in France in World War I. Published in Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
