Shown here is T. J. Thomas of Fort Worth, Texas, a state finalist in the light-heavy-weight division of the Golden Gloves tournament in 1939. This Navy fireman first class manned a.20 millimeter gun on an Landing Ship, Tank (LST) which saw action at Okinawa and, later, carried troops for the occupation of Japan. He is wearing his Navy uniform, standing against a bare wall, facing front and smiling. He arrived home on leave after almost a year in the Pacific and got a rousing welcome from his wife, the former Dorothy Sauls, their two children, Tommy, and Jimmy, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Thomas. He is a former Diamond Hill High School student. The sailor will leave February 5 for Camp Wallace, Galveston. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, evening edition, January 29, 1946.
