Description
Pictured here is Second Lieutenant (Lt.) Wayne W. Dillard. Lieutenant Dillard, B-17 bombardier who was shot down on his fourth mission, December 1, 1943, is shown here dressed in uniform and standing against a bare wall, facing front and posing for the camera. His plane was damaged by German fighters severely and the crew had to bail out before they reached Solengen, their target. Lieutenant Dillard scored fatal hits on two of the enemy planes. He won the Air Medal and a cluster for this action. He was in German prison for 17 months and was liberated May 1 by the Russians. He joined the 8th Air Force in England in October 1943. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dillard. He is now spending a 60-day leave with his wife, the former Miss Cym hatcher. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram evening edition, July 9, 1945.
