Description
The Star-Telegram sponsored Noah's Ark Fund to buy animals for the Forest Park Zoo is accumulating but too gradually. The plan is to purchase a pair of tigers for the zoo (cost: $1,500) and such other animals as are needed to round out the family life in the zoo. Certain spinsters and bachelor animals at the zoo have as bad a case of spring fever as anybody. Oryginae are lonely. Take the Oryginae, for example. Oryginae means two or more Oryx-es and even one Oryx means a species of rare and beautiful African antelope. Forest Park Zoo has two which came here three years ago. It would be a fine thing for any zoo to have two of them except that both these two are somewhat restless spinsters. They are developing nervous habits, like looking under the hay at night, and Zookeeper Hamilton Hittson has caught them reading Myrtle Meyer Eldred's column, "Your Baby and Mine." He thinks they yearn for motherhood. One male would be enough. It would cost quite a good deal of money to provide both these Oryginae with mates, but fortunately that isn't necessary. They practice polygamy. So one Oryx (male) at a cost of $900 would insure the patter of little Oryx hoofs at Forest Park Zoo. Photograph of the two female Oryginae are shown in their enclosure at Forest Park Zoo. Published in The Fort Worth Star-Telegram Morning Edition March 23, 1947.
