For Them, July Fourth Has More Significance – The Fourth of July has more significance this year for five Fort Worth residents who only last week became citizens of the United States in naturalization ceremonies in U. S. District Court here. They are Mrs. Stella Kelly Vlasis, Miss Ruth Ellen Marcks, Sam Spigel, Erich Rudolph Koch, and Mrs. Leocadia Marie Korolevitch. The unanimous expression of these new citizens is of their happiness – they all beam when they tell you how glad they are to be citizens of the United States. Miss Ruth Ellen Marcks took time off from her nursing duties in the delivery room at Harris Memorial Methodist Hospital to express her happiness to over her citizenship. Miss Marcks is shown in her nurses' uniform, sitting at the hospital counter, facing front, smiling and posing for the photo. This young Jewish girl had to flee Germany in 1939 and is thankful that she was able to come to America and "follow my chosen career which was denied me in my native land." She lives at 1819 Fifth Avenue, and is taking nursing education at Texas Christian University (TCU) in her spare time. To these new citizens the Stars and Stripes will shine a little more brightly Thursday and they will hold their heads a little higher as they join in Independence Day celebrations now that they “really belong.” Published in The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, July 4, 1946.
