Description
Granvil Owens, boatswain's mate first class, veteran of nine Navy battles and of seven months of mine sweeping in the Pacific, is back home in Fort Worth after his second tour of overseas duty. He and his 7-year-old daughter, Ruby Mae, are with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Owens. Owens is on leave from a Navy "suicide ship", which has just completed seven months of clearing mines from channels and harbors around Japan. He was awarded the Navy Unit Citation for volunteering his service in this work. His nine battle stars, won during his first tour of duty, are for participation in campaigns in the Aleutians, Gilberts, Marshalls, at New Ireland, Saipan, Guam and Okinawa. He served as gun captain on a 40 millimeter gun. Owens will report to the Naval Air Station, Dallas, Texas, at the end of his 30-day leave. In this picture, he is wearing his military uniform and standing against the wall. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, February 24, 1946.
