Description

Fort Worth will have some 30 hometown boys trying for places on professional baseball teams this spring. One prospect who grew up and played with some good teams during the war years is Gordon Donaldson. He is the ex-Poly High basket ball and baseball star and should not be confused with the athlete of the same name who played in the West Texas-New Mexico League before the war. Owned by the Cubs, he will go to camp at New Braunfels with Tulsa. Donaldson looked at some nifty pitching during two seasons with Fort Worth Army Air Field (FWAAF) and one year with the San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center nine. While there, he played on the same team with Enos Slaughter and Howard Pollet and faced such pitchers as Dave Ferriss, now of the Red Sox. Before entering the service, Donaldson led the Pioneer League in fielding as second baseman for Idaho Falls; hit around.290. The soft-spoken 150-pounder may not be quite ready for the Texas League, but he looks like a comer. In this picture, he is standing with hands on hips. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, February 19, 1946.
