    Description

Here's the approved salute to be given when the pledge of allegiance is taken, as demonstrated by an ordinary citizen, Boy Scout, school girl and uniformed officer. Left to right, Arwin Blanke, 1125 Hawthorne Street; Jerry Trimble, 12, of Troop No. 104, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Trimble, 704 West Central Avenue; Janie Reynolds, 13, daughter of Mrs. Lucile Reynolds, 1020 Alston Avenue; and police Sergeant Joe Rice, 313 Blandin Street. All are shown saluting an American Flag outside. The scout clasps thumb and little finger in the palm of his hand. Except for the girl, the salutes given here also are to be bestowed on the flag alone. However, it is also proper for the adult civilian to extend his hand, palm upward, when the pledge is given. Civilians stand erect with right hand over heart, extending the hand at the words, "to the flag." Published in Fort Worth Star-Telegram evening edition July 3, 1940.
