Description
Lone Worker on Duty at Former Service Center. Mrs. C. R. Goodrich, volunteer worker at Service Men's Center, keeps a lonely vigil at the telephone in the empty building at Fourth and Houston from which the center has recently moved. She stays at the telephone from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day to answer inquiries until all equipment is moved out of the building and it is turned over to the J.C. Penney & Company. Mrs. Goodrich, who brings her lunch with her each day, says that she enjoys watching the equipment being moved out and knowing to what groups it is being donated. She is a sister-in-law of Maury Maverick, former director of Smaller War Plants Corporation and one time congressman. Now that the SMC has resumed operation at the Hotel Texas, the Bowen SMC has been closed, Mrs. Orville Tunstill, center director, said Friday. Beds, bedding, and chairs from the downtown center have been donated to the San Jose Mexican Mission, and game equipment has been given to the Jewish Welfare Board. Mrs. Goodrich is shown seated at a desk, speaking on the phone at the old center location. She is wearing a dress and a beret. She is holding the phone in one hand and in the other she has a bottled beverage. On the desk are the phone, a newspaper, a purse, and writing materials.
