Description
Miss Valley Nelson, former Tsientsin nurse, survived three and a half years of imprisonment by the Japanese. She went to China in 1924 and became a staff nurse at Tsientsin Memorial Hospital, sponsored by the Congregational mission board. In 1941 she left for the United States and her ship at the Manila harbor was attacked by the Japanese. She was placed in Santo Tomas prison camp and later moved to Los Banos camp, Philippines. She returned to Fort Worth for the first time in eight years to visit her lifelong friend Mrs. Orlin P. Morse. After the visit, Miss Nelson plans to return to her home in Tacoma, Washington to await passage to China. She hopes to return to her old hospital and continue the work she began before the war. Miss Nelson is sitting in an armchair with her hands folded across her lap. She is wearing a blazer and a skirt. Behind her there is a table with flowers and a hanging picture. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, January 9, 1946.
