    Description

The flu epidemic almost ruined plans for Mrs. Lucy Calvin's 87th birthday celebration, but two daughters and their families were on hand to help her eat turkey dinner and blow out the candles on her cake. The celebration was held at the home of one of Mrs. Calvin's daughters, Mrs. E. T. Herbert, 2566 Highview. Also present was Mrs. Joe Anthony, of San Francisco, and her family. There are three other children: Mrs. Donna Lee Lackland and Jessie Calvin of Fort Worth, and B. C. Calvin of San Antonio. Mrs. Calvin has six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A resident of Fort Worth all her life, Mrs. Calvin was born near the present site of the Masonic Home in 1858. She is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Noel Burton. In 1879, she married James C. Calvin, who later owned a livery stable located in the area of the present 6th Ward Fire Hall. He also opened one of Fort Worth's first meat markets in the same neighborhood, about a block west of his livery stable. Despite the flu epidemic that spoiled Mrs. Herbert's plans for a large party for her mother; friends dropped in all Sunday afternoon to wish Mrs. Calvin a happy birthday, and to present gifts. And Mrs. Calvin had "a simply marvelous day". Mrs. Calvin is wearing a dark colored dress with a corsage. She is sitting at the head of the table with her birthday cake. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram evening edition, December 24, 1945.
