Description
Chief Petty Officer Thomas B. Hipps, left, went through the Pearl Harbor attack, enrolled Friday in an air conditioning and refrigeration course at the Technical Institute annex at Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum. He was at Ford Island naval station when the Japanese bombs began dropping. He stated "too many and too close for comfort". Then he served 36 months on escort carriers in the Atlantic and Pacific, completing 24 years of Navy service last September. He's now on inactive duty and will be eligible for retirement in seven more years. Mr. Hipps is wearing a jacket over a sweater and is standing next to an unidentified man wearing coveralls.
