    Description

War veterans John Buchanan, left, W. A. Autry, right, and an unnamed man standing in the middle. John Buchanan, 615 Saint Louis, was a submariner who was asleep aboard his sub at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese gave him a rude awakening. The USS Pennsylvania was right in front of his submarine and she "caught it". The USS Ogalala, a mine layer, was directly behind and Japanese bombs sent her to the bottom of the harbor. Buchanan stayed in the Pacific until November 1942, served later on the East Coast, and was discharged last April. A signalman aboard the USS Maryland, W. A. Autry, 1805 Denver, was at chow when two Japanese bombs hit the ship, one in the forecastle and one on the port bow, below the water line. He helped carry ammunition for the guns, and aided in taking aboard personnel of the hard-hit USS Oklahoma. He remained on the USS Maryland until June 1942, served four months on the USS Colorado, and then was in the South Pacific at Guadalcanal and Tarawa until 1944. After service on two destroyers he was discharged last October. Mr. Buchanan is wearing a long sleeve shirt, pants, and I tie with a submarine pendant. Mr. Autry is wearing a long sleeve shirt and pants. Star-Telegram Evening Edition December 8, 1945
