Army Nurse Corps Lieutenant Bernice E. Ray. Nurse Ray is shown standing in front of an empty wall wearing her uniform and smiling as she looks off to the side. She has served two years in Africa and Italy and was heading for Manilla, Philippines before news of Japan's surrender was shared. Afterwards, the ship she was taking headed home instead. In Africa. Ray was put in charge of a ward of 275 wounded German prisoners, who had been transported to Italy.
