Virgil Hughes, 19, radioman second class, who helped to land troops for the invasion of Okinawa, is spending a nine-day leave with his mother, Mrs. V. R. Hughes. A graduate of Polytechnic High, he formerly worked in the advertising department of the Star-Telegram. He is wearing his military uniform and posing for a picture. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram evening edition, August 9, 1945.
