Description
After logging 100 hours as pilot of a torpedo-bomber based aboard a "jeep" carrier in the Pacific, Lieutenant Robert L. Bumgardner, United States Navy Reserve (USNR), returned to the States to spend a 30-day leave with relatives in Fort Worth and Waco. Bumgardner was with a squadron that supported ground troops on Okinawa by bombing enemy emplacements spotted by infantrymen who radioed location to the planes. He said he missed the Purple Heart once by one inch when flak shrapnel hit the plane and ripped through the back and sleeve of his jacket. However, he won the Air Medal with two gold stars, awarded for meritorious service, and the 3rd Fleet Commendation Bar. He and his wife, Florence, are visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Bumgardner of Waco, and his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. R. Q. Spencer. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, August 9, 1945.
