Description

Mrs. Mary Olive Highsmith heartily joined the celebration of her 97th birthday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lena Mae Payne, 2728 Saint Louis Avenue, Fort Worth, Texas. She is shown seated in a chair, resting her hands in her lap. She is wearing a dark color long dress, and a pair of eyeglasses. She blew out her birthday candles with the first puff and then helped some of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren eat the cake. She is a native of Georgia and a resident in Fort Worth, Texas for 39 years, since 1906, when she moved here with her husband, John B. Highsmith. Mr. Highsmith died in 1910. Mrs. Highsmith is living with her Daughter Mrs. Payne for the past 30 years. Proud of the record that she has never been seriously ill and has never been inside a hospital, and undisturbed by the fact that she has never seen a talkie film and has never been inside an airplane. Mrs. Highsmith says she attributes her healthy old age mostly to a life of "hard work". She has lived through the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War I. She is now seeing World War II, in which two of her grandsons now are fighting. She has eight other grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She has a 92-year-old sister, Mrs. Martha Williams. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, June 24, 1945.
