Description
Back home again on leave. Photograph of Private Chester Willis and family. Private Willis was missing for seven months in the European theater. Liberated by the Russians after 20 months in four German prison camps, Private Willis just wants to "sleep, rest, and eat my mother's cooking." Willis went overseas with the 36th Division in April 1943 and was captured during the invasion of Salerno in September 1943. His parents received no word from him until the following March. Willis, of Arlington, entered the Army in February 1941. He was graduated from Arlington High School and worked for the Sewell Motor Company in Odessa. He wears the European campaign ribbon with two stars, the good conduct medal, and the ribbon for service before Pearl Harbor. Standing are soldier's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Willis. Sitting are Private Willis (center), and two sisters, Miss Katy May Willis and right, Mrs. Hubert H. Heinfeld. Published in The Fort Worth Star-Telegram Evening Edition June 21, 1945.
