Description

Fort Worth man was in first assault on Siegfried. Tom D. Taylor, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom D. Taylor, 3800 Clark Ave., is home on a 45-day convalescent furlough from Harmon General Hospital, Longview, Texas. He was called to active duty from the enlisted reserves on March 23, 1943, went overseas in September 1944, and was wounded November 20, 1944. He was been back in the States since March 22, this year. Taylor was serving as rifleman runner with the 84th Division, 9th Army, in the initial assault on the Siegfried Line when a German sniper shot him in the right arm. He was evacuated to Liege, Belgium, for hospitalization at the time when Hitler promised Liege a buzz-bomb every five minutes. "But", said Taylor, "They didn't come every five minutes. They came oftener." At Harmon General Hospital, a piece of bone was removed from his leg and grafted into his shattered arm. Private Taylor is standing against a wall wearing his military uniform.
