Description
Sergeant S. L. Nichols, a prisoner of war, has returned home to his wife and met his nineteen-month-old son, Stephen Lynn. He is showing them a loaf of bread from Stalag 3-C. The loaf was daily fare for seven prisoners and Sergeant Nichols ate quite a lot of the bread for nearly a year. The gummy loaf weighs three and a half pounds and is made of sawdust and potato flour. On close examination, one may notice the shreds of wood. The family is sitting together on a couch. Sergeant Nichols is dressed in his military uniform. Mrs. Nichols is wearing a dark colored dress. Stephen Lynn is wearing a short-sleeve shirt and shorts.
