Description
Cynthia Cook, 7-month-old, is a daughter of Sergeant and Mrs. Frederick G. Cook. She is christened in a robe made by her great-great-grand-mother at the outset of the Civil War. It is a frock of fine quality linen softer than batiste, made entirely by hand, and daintily decorated with eyelet and French embroidery, with 20 rows of tiny shirring at the neckline and waist. Its only alteration during 80-odd years has been a streamer of satin ribbons caught in a cluster at the neckline, providing the wearer with a playful diversion while grownups muse on grownup subjects. The garment was first worn in 1861 by Cynthia's great-grand-mother who was christened in San Saba and who later became Mrs. Wadsworth Hart. Mrs Hart had her daughter, Mrs. Frances H. Cook, christened in the same robe, and Mrs. Cook had Cynthia's father and her other son, Richard L. Cook, both christened in the dress. In this picture, Cynthia Cook is wearing the robe and sitting on a chair covered by a blanket. She is facing left and smile. Published in Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, April 1, 1945.
