First Lieutenant (Lt.) Lawrence J. Payne is pictured here. He is shown standing against a bare wall, facing front and smiling for the camera. He is dressed in uniform. He entered service in March 1943. Payne has ten oak leaf clusters to his Air Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and is entitled to wear the presidential unit citation ribbon. The B-25 pilot stationed with the 12th Air Force in Corsica for almost nine months, he went on 67 bombing missions, including bombarding the battleship Strasbourg at Toulon Harbor in southern France. Lieutenant (Lt.) Payne played football at Arlington Heights High School, where he was graduated in 1941. He is a former student of Texas A & M University (A&M). Now he is home on a 21-day leave visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Payne. He has a brother, T. H. Payne Jr. Lieutenant (Lt.) Payne will leave on March 15 to report for reassignment at Santa Ana, California. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram evening edition, Mach 5, 1945.
