Description
Captain Frederick A. McGinnis, paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division from Houston wins Silver Star and a certain hill on Leyte now bears his name. He destroyed a Japanese machine-gun nest and a knee mortar and both crews during a counterattack by the enemy in the Central Lyete mountains, Philippines, last November 30. The Japanese riflemen were advancing under a screen of mortar and machine-gun fire and McGinnis' company was pinned down. McGinnis saw a clear route to one of their machine gun position and decided to take it. Shown is a portrait photograph of McGinnis in uniform. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram evening edition, March 5, 1945.
