Raymond Cox, 23-year-old veteran of 26 months service in the South Pacific, left Fort Worth Thursday to report to Parris Island, S. C., after spending a 30-day leave with his mother, Mrs. Viola Cox, 933 Hemphill.Cox served as chief of section of personnel in 1st Division regimental headquarters on Guadalcanal and in Melbourne, Australia, Cape Gloucester, New Britain [Papua New Guinea] and the Russell Islands {Solomon Islands].'I was never in actual combat--just bombings and shellings,' Cox remarked. 'And I was never wounded.'A regimental headquarters section is composed of about 35 men, he says. Some in the group land on the islands about 30 or 40 minutes after the initial attack to set up headquarters and communications with all the combat units. The remaining men in the section follow at intervals, bringing in more supplies and equipment.Cox is a graduate of Paschal High School and was employed at Terrell Laboratories before he enlisted in August 1942. A brother, Virgil Cox, lives at 2404 Gould and a sister, Mozelle Cox, lives here with her mother. Another sister, Mrs. J. D. Duncan, lives in Dallas."
