Description

Lieutenant Prentice E. Ross, 21 year old B-26 navigator. A man standing, wearing a military Air Forces uniform. He has several insignia on his uniform, including ribbon of honor with clusters."Navigator Visits Parents After 67 Combat Missions--First Lt. Prentice E. Ross, 21-year-old navigator and veteran of 67 combat missions over European targets, will report to Miami for reassignment Wednesday after spending a 30-day furlough in Fort Worth 'with the folks.'The 'folks' are Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Ross, 3825 Ryan.Ross, who holds the DFC, Air Medal with 11 clusters and the Purple Heart, and wears battle stars for four major air engagements, is shy about his part in the raids of his 9th Air Force bomber. Most of the missions he describes as 'just plain hard work.' Only one, his second mission over Avranches on D-Day when his plane dropped from the usual 13,000 feet to 1,500 feet to bomb a railway station swarming with Germans, was in the adventure class. The real thrill of his 18 months overseas Ross found on the ground in England.'I met her at a country dance,' he grins. 'She was the most beautiful girl I'd seen--blond, blue eyes, tall--so I made it a point to go with her. That was July 1942. We were married the next December.'The couple's young son, 5-month-old Jeffry Earl, is with his mother, Mrs. Dorothy Phyllis Ross, and her parents in Dagenham, Essex, England. Lieutenant Ross expects to show them the states in March or April.Ross is a graduate of Paschal High School and attended NTAC. He entered the Air Forces in February 1942. His brother, Corp. Robert L. Ross, is a gunner on a B-17 and awaiting overseas orders."
