Staff Sergeant William R. George. A picture of a man in a military uniform. Military insignia on jacket breast. "Gunner Studying to be Instructor--HOUSTON, Jan. 31 (Spl.)--Staff Sgt. William R. George, who served eight months as a ball turret gunner and armorer on a Flying Fortress of the 8th Air Force in England, returned home Dec. 1, and is now taking an instructor's course at Laredo.He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (D. F. C. for a special mission, and also holds the Air Medal with four clusters. His plane, called Mairzetoats, was lost over Berlin after he had completed his combat tour of 36 missions.Earlier, this Fortress, damaged by flak, barely managed to make base on one engine. With hydraulic system and controls shot out, a crash landing was made at a speed of 130 miles.Returning at dawn from a night mission, on D-Day, George witnessed the impressive array of ships conveying our forces across the channel to the Normandy coast.Instead of resting, his crew received orders to take off at once in support of the ground forces, and they dropped their bombs exactly one minute before the first wave landed. He made two trips that day.George participated also in a mission in which 2,600 Allied planes were engaged.A native of Grosbeck, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. George. His wife is the former Miss Bernice Huebner."
