Clipping: "Civil Affairs Officer Is Back From Duty in Europe Impressed by the loyalty and hospitality of the liberated peoples with whom he was associated for more than six months, Capt. W. Frank Patterson Jr., husband of Mrs. Rebecca Patterson, 933 Morningside Dr., is back in Fort Worth after service as an administrative officer of the Allied Civil Affairs detachment in Europe. Patterson is the son of Mr. And Mrs. W. Frank Patterson, 2622 S. Jennings. Captain Patterson and his civil affairs staff, one of the first to land on the continent after the invasion, for some time were situated in towns on the Cherbourg Peninsula, but later we4re moved inland. 'Our job on entering a liberated town,' Patterson related, 'was, first to settle ourselves in proper headquarters and, secondly, to see to civilian comfort. Our officers immediately contacted postal, telegraph, telephone, public health, school, railroad, bank and civil officials of the village and began working with them in the establishment and maintenance of order in the different departments.' High on his list of exciting experiences is the five-day defense, with his staff of 10 men, of a peninsula town deserted by the main American force and shelled constantly by the enemy. 'When the GIs came back in to pick up our bodies,' he laughed, 'we marched 41 German prisoners and went calmly about our business—much to the astonishment of the thunderstruck infantry.' Patterson is a former Fort Worth attorney and served in the State Legislature for six years. Captain and Mrs. Patterson have two young daughters, Dorothy, 13, and Patty, 6."
