A member of the 2nd Division Rangers, Staff Sergeant James C. Surles, 22, who was wounded during the battle for Brest, France, is spending a 21-day leave with his mother, Mrs. Dorothy Warren. Sergeant Surles has been awarded the Purple Heart as well as the Bronze Star. He is shown standing against a bare wall, wearing his military uniform. Published in Fort Worth Star-Telegram, evening edition, January 17, 1945.
