Description
Raymond B. Shipp is a seaman second class that served on the Gambier Bay carrier. On October 25, the carrier sunk in the Philippian Sea. Mr. Shipp was one of the survivors. They floated in the water for four days before they were rescued. The wounded were put on the few salvage rafts and the rest swam beside the rafts. When they were finally rescued, they were nine miles from a Japanese island. The 18-year-old sailor enlisted 15 months earlier and was home in Fort Worth, Texas, to visit his mother, Mrs. John Kelly. Mr. Shipp suffered from nothing more than a severe case of hunger and a swollen tongue, both of which are cured. He is standing in front of a wall, wearing his military uniform.
