Harris, starting his first year as coach at Handley High School, has a real job ahead of him if he fills the shoes of his predecessor. For the Handley team has a habit of winning district titles. Last year they Greyhounds, under veteran Coach E. L. Lowe, won the district and bi-district titles. But Harris and his boys are going to make a mighty effort to keep those titles.The Greyhounds have started out fairly well this year, winning one and losing one so far. They beat Birdville 20-0 in the opening game of the season but lost to Weatherford, a Class AA team, 31-0. Their next game is set for Friday night against Grandview at Grandview.The Diamond Hill team, chief rival of the Handley District 14-A, also lost to Weatherford this year, by 18-0, and rated by those two scores alone would be favored to beat Handley in their game on Nov. 18 at Farrington Field but Coad Harris hopes his boys will show enough improvement in the intervening games to go on the field with an even chance against the Eagles.This is Harris' second year as coach. His first was last year at Mission where his team won the district title. Fort Worth is his home and he is a graduate of Texas Wesleyan, where ti played football. His predecessor at Grandview is now coach at Amon Carter Riverside.The starting eleven at Handley consists of Bob Barron, right end; Ruel Austin, right tackle; Charles Johnson, right guard; Don Powers, center [position], Roy Pearce, left guard; Bill Rollins, left tackle; John Meaders, his left end; Dub Lumpkin, right half; Jackie McLaughlin, quarter-back; Charles Whittle; left half, and Jack Swofford, fullback. Whittle is captain and Austin co-captain.Lumpkin is probably his best player on offense and McLaughlin is a standout on defense.
