Description
Jim Conarty, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Conarty, (right), is holding a figurine of a bulldog. He carried it to his classroom at Crestwood Elementary School for display during National Dog Week. He told his teacher that the bulldog looked just like his dog, Smoky. When he explained that the tiny statue always would have to serve as a picture, that Smoky died in action a year ago with the Marines in the jungles of New Guinea. Smoky became the typical hero of Dog Week to the boys and girls at Crestwood. Smoky went into service when he was almost two years old with the first "draft" of Dogs for Defense, and was sent to the South Pacific to fight with Marines. He was "credited with 15 Japs". He had spotted those 15 enemies and aided in their capture. In this picture is Jim Conarty wearing a white button down shirt as he holds up the dog figurine in his right hand showing to his classmate.
