Description

James Holcomb, Who Was Shot Down in Yugoslavia, 'Walks In' on His Family -- Technical Sergeant James Thurman Holcomb, B-17 engineer and top turret gunner was shot down over Yugoslavia on April 16 and reported missing in action until August 24. He is shown sitting on a chair leaned against the wall with both hands touching each other on his lap. He is wearing uniform, facing front and smiling for the camera. Holcomb wears the Purple Heart for a flak wound. His family received the official message from the War Department that he had returned safely to his base after an absence of 116 days. He wanted to surprise his family and telephoned his mother, Mrs. A. A. Holcomb and sister, Mrs. R. A. Howeth at 8 a.m. from the Texas and Pacific (T&P ) Passenger Station. They lost no time getting to the station to pick him up. Published in The Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, September 9, 1944.
