    Description

Sergeant One of First on Beach -- Staff Sergeant Homer Jackson, grandson of G. J. Morris of Kennedale, and son of Mr. and Mrs. B. Jackson of the Denver community in Montague County, was with a group of combat engineers who were among the first troops ashore on the first day of the original invasion of France. A half-bust photograph of Sergeant Jackson is shown here. A young man in uniform, facing front and is smiling. He went with a group of engineers whose assignment was rated a "suicide mission." Their job was to move into the beach in advance of the zero hour in order to remove underwater mines and make a path for the assault craft, and to clear the beach of land mines.
