Description

Fort Worth man, Sergeant W. E. Jary Junior, is editor of the T-Patch, the first newspaper of the 36th Division in Italy. Sergeant Jary is pictured in his military uniform. He is wearing an insignia of some sort on his uniform hat. Clipping: "Fort Worth Man Edits 36th Division Newspaper Sgt. W. E. Jary Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Jary of 1505 Grand, is editor of the T-Patch, first newspaper of the 36th Division in Italy. It was Jary's idea and mainly through his efforts that the paper was started. Two editions of the T-Patch have been published, and he expects in the future to put it out about every eight days.He hasn't been able yet to mail a complete copy out of Italy, but he sent a clipping showing the masthead and a story of the Screen-Door Canteen. The latter is operated by the Division Special Service office in co-operation with the Red Cross. It is situated in a former exclusive Italian restaurant and offers ice-cream, lemonade, snacks, coffee and doughnuts, as well as movies in the patio, to enlisted men of the 36th. Tuesdays and Saturdays are set aside for officers. More than 1,000 men are entertained nightly. The name was suggested by Jary.Jary, 30, a member of the National Guard, was among the first men of Fort Worth to be called to service and, later, one of the first to land on Salerno. He has seen action in North Africa, at Anzio, Salerno and Cassino. He said his work ins now quite a contrast to the previous winter he spent in foxholes. About four months ago Jary was transferred to the Special Service unit which is in charge of USO shows touring army camps overseas. He sent home a snapshot of himself with the movie actress Marlene Dietrich, taken in camp last May. He was graduated from North Side High School and attended art school in Chicago. He has been overseas 18 months." Published Star-Telegram Eve. Aug. 3, 1944.
