Description

Captain Richard B. Smith, 23 , sunburned B-24 pilot who flew 25 combat missions "without a scratch" in the ship named after his wife, "Marion," is in Fort Worth after 13 months overseas duty. He married his wife only a month before leaving the States in June, 1943. She is the former Miss Marion Becker, daughter of Colonel and Mrs. J. R. Becker. Since going over he has served in North Africa, the Middle East and England. On his first mission, which was over Crete, his crew shot down two enemy fighters and he decided that "combat wasn't really so bad." On that flight his plan got one bullet hole in the No.2 engine, the only bullet hole inflicted on the "Marion" by enemy fighters during his whole tour of duty. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Smith, entered service in August, 1941. He trained at Hicks Field, 1942 Perrin Field, Lubbock Army Flying School and Fort Worth Army Air Field. He is wearing a military uniform and posing for a picture. Published in Fort Worth Star-Telegram, evening edition, July 28, 1944.
