    Miss Phyllis Strayhan, left, and Miss Bettie Baker, being sworn into the Women Accepted For Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) by Ensign Frances W. Sparks. Miss Strayhan is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Strayhan Jr. and Miss Baker is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. N. Baker. All three women are standing in a room near an American flag. Ensign Sparks is wearing uniform and holding a piece of paper. Miss Strayhan and Miss Baker are raising their right hands for the oath and behind them is a banner that has a woman's picture and saying 'To Make Men Free'.
