Description

Howard W. Barlow is known as the "flying college dean" because of his enthusiasm for aviation. When Gibb Gilchrist, dean of the Engineering School, was elected president of Texas A. & M., Barlow succeeded him as acting dean. Barlow predicted that "the air is the way Texas people will get around in the future because of our great distances in the state, and out excellent flying weather." He also said Texas A. & M. is the only school in the Southwest with an accredited course in aeronautical engineering, and it had the largest enrollment last year of any aeronautical engineering department in the nation. Texas A. & M. has a 400-acre airport with 5,150 foot runways and up-to-the-minute equipment for its million dollar plant. Barlow hopes to make the aeronautics plant one of the finest in the nation, giving students a practical laboratory to learn flying, mechanical training, and airport management by actually doing the things connected with them. In this picture, he is sitting on a chair. There are two framed airplanes pictures hanging on the wall behind him. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, June 9, 1944.
