Military portrait photograph of First Lieutenant James Gardner (left), a Liberator pilot stationed in Italy with the Army Air Forces. He has won the Air Medal with three clusters for the completion of 20 missions. Lieutenant Gardner is enjoying a seven-day rest on the Isle of Capri after the crash of his bomber, the Flying Flivver, in the Adriatic Sea. At the right of Lieutenant Gardner's photograph is a portrait photograph of an unidentified man wearing a military uniform.
