Description

Painting "Lygeia," by Veronica Helfensteller. The painting is an illustration for Edgar Allen Poe's poem. This is the only picture in the Veronica Helfensteller exhibition which approaches surrealism in subject matter and composition. The painting is being held at the Public Library gallery. The illustration has various objects in what seems to be a dream setting. A head of a woman with sad face. There is a cobra wrapping around her neck. A small giraffe, with little detail, is just in front of the cobra's mouth. There are four stars next to a butterfly. Under the butterfly is a violin with a book of sheet music. To the left of that are a woman with long hair wit her arm on the shoulder of a man as she stands next to him. The man is sitting on a stool, at a desk, with a writing tool in hand. His arm rests on a paper. Their are books and a globe on the desk. Behind all of this is a one story building with a tower and two windows. Published in The Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, May 21, 1944.
