Description
Charles Edward Dennis is shown with watercress. He is known as "The Water Cress King of America". Atop Hotel Texas, in the Bluebonnet Court, Mr. Dennis presided at a hug cut-glass punch bowl filled with fresh, crisp bunches of cress to be sampled by visitors, as the convention of the State Restaurant Association of Texas opened. He has added modern scientific washing and pre-cooling to the business established by his father, Frank Dennis, in 1874. The story of the family's watercress business began in 1874 when the late Frank Dennis picked a few bunches of the tangy herb near his home in West Long Branch, New Jersey, and the neighbors were glad to buy it. Business grew by leaps and bounds. Dennis grows watercress in five states and ships it into 34 others, from Maine to Florida and from the Dakotas to Texas and from New York to Colorado. In this picture, Mr. Dennis has on a plaid-patterned suit with a geometric design tie, ring on his ring finger, wrist watch and tinted, octagon-shaped, bifocal eyeglasses. He is standing behind a table displayed with various brochures, pencils and cards and he is looking down at a handful of watercress that he is holding up in his right hand. There are two signs hanging behind him. Published in Fort Worth Star-Telegram, morning edition, May 11, 1944.
