    Description

    Major Carl E. Taylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Taylor of Route Three, Denison, a P-38 fighter squadron commander, received the Purple Heart and a cluster to his distinguished flying cross for a daring engagement with superior Japanese forces over Cape Gloucester, New Britain. In this encounter, Talyor led the third flight of a formation of 17 Lightnings that were providing the only top cover for the ground forces. He engage in air combat with 50-60 Japanese fighters and 25-30 divebombers. He has flown 150 sorties and holds an Air Medal with three clusters.
